San Lucio pass (1541 m), which is nowadays a well-known tourist destination for mountain lovers, was an important link between Val Colla and Val Cavargna until XVIII century. It is located between Sopraceneri and Lombardy on the slope of Monte Gazzirola.
The view towards the valley of Colla and the valley of Cavargna is spectacular.
This passage still marks the border between Italy and Switzerland.
A few meters away, on the Italian side, you will find the ancient and beautiful chapel of San Lucio. It is decorated with frescos that were recently discovered during restorations. On July 12 and August 16 there is the celebration of San Lucio (or San Uguzo), the patron of the mountaineers who had been killed. Every year up to 3000 people participate in the celebration.
In addition you can find two shelters, one on the Swiss side and a church (chapel of St. Lucius). The pass can be reached from the Swiss side by foot within one hour and 30 minutes from Bogno, within one hour and 30 minutes from Certara and within one hour and 30 minutes from Cimadera. The chapel San Lucio owes its name the village.
